An Upstate man was sentenced on Wednesday for his role in an armed home invasion in 2017, said the solicitor's office.
According to Solicitor Barry Barnette, 24-year-old Calvin Lee Phillips of Boiling Springs pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary, attempted armed robbery, first-degree assault and battery, kidnapping and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
Phillips was sentenced to 20 years behind bars.
Barnette said the home invasion happened back on April 24, 2017 at residence on Sprouse Road.
According to Barnette, one of the victims reported being assaulted in the yard, and then forced inside the home while a gun was held to his head. Once inside, the victim said he fought with the assailant, knocking the weapon out of the attacker's hands.
During the fight, the victim said he yelled to his brother for help. His brother entered the room armed with a shotgun and shot at both suspects, said Barnette.
Phillips and his accomplice, 22-year-old Destinie Nichole Matheny of Inman, then fled the home, said the solicitor's office.
Phillips and Mattheny drove to the emergency room at Mary Black Hospital and requested medical treatment for their wounds. That's when the solicitor's office said a hospital representative reported the shootings to the Sheriff's Office.
Court documents said Matheny gave inconsistent accounts of the incident when interviewed by deputies. Assistant Solicitor Spenser Smith said the sheriff's office recovered physical evidence at the crime scene that confirmed statements given by the home invasion victims.
Matheny pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted armed robbery, first-degree assault and battery and kidnapping on March 14.She was issued a 20-year prison sentence suspended to 10 years of service and years of probation.
Phillips is required to serve 85% of his 20-year sentence before becoming eligible for release.Court documents said his prior criminal record includes convictions for marijuana possession, possession of a stolen vehicle, failure to stop for police, reckless driving and third-degree domestic violence.
